One of Manitoba's largest and most distinguished law firms, Taylor McCaffrey LLP established its reputation on old-school values, and more than 50 years later, that tradition continues.
Reeh Taylor and D'Arcy McCaffrey built the practice from the ground up, providing legal counsel on all aspects of business and life, explains Norman Snyder, Chair and Managing Partner.
"What set them apart from everyone else was the way they treated people, and it is those values that we try to maintain today. They provided excellent counsel and treated everyone the same - with respect and courtesy - and they emphasized the importance of giving back to the community," Snyder says. "It was always about more than just practicing law."
The full-service firm has a team of more than 60 lawyers practicing in every area of law. Service is available in French and Italian, and the firm maintains rural offices in Gimli, Riverton and Winnipeg Beach.
In keeping with its roots as an owner-operated startup, the firm looks to entrepreneurs as a key target market. Three of its five core areas of practice are business-related, including corporate and commercial, taxation, labour and employment law.
Selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Canada 2017 in the fields of Corporate and Securities law, Snyder has frequently been recognized by Best Lawyers. He specializes in securities law; relating to financing and the investment of capital.
"I find that here in Manitoba we spend a great deal of time advising startup or private businesses on how to raise capital," he says. "Securities regulation falls under provincial jurisdiction, with each province having its own securities commission. Clients are often surprised to learn that the scope of that regulation extends to privately held companies, and is complicated by the fact that companies now operated in many provinces seek investors across the country or elsewhere."
Laws of those other jurisdictions come into play, but Snyder enjoys the challenge of navigating complex legal issues on behalf of his clients. "For me, working through all the regulations and restrictions to find practical solutions for businesses and investors is what makes this such an interesting area of law."
Taylor McCaffrey takes advantage of the latest technology, and its St. Mary Avenue flagship office's physical proximity to the provincial courts and Manitoba Legislative Building, to stay abreast of changes in legislation and other governmental action in order to best serve its clients.
Snyder expects that given the ever-increasing complexity of tax-driven transactions, intellectual property and information technology practices, the firm will continue to grow to meet the changing needs of clients, without compromising its core values.
Taylor McCaffrey continues to support local non-profits and charities and many of its lawyers are generous with their time, sitting on community boards or providing pro bono legal advice. "I'm very proud of our lawyers and their involvement in helping to make Winnipeg such a great place to live," Snyder says.
"I think if you try to always practice excellence and treat everyone with respect, your reputation will speak for itself."
